It’s hard to believe that the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum’s annual fundraiser will be celebrating its 11th year, this year. In a rather inspiring twist, the Cottage Tour committee (made up of three volunteers and two staff members) have chosen to tour the area of mid-town Cannon Beach. An area that has yet to be toured.
Get out your walking shoes and prepare yourself for some truly inspiring homes. The focus this year is partly on the craftsmanship of Cannon Beach. A new take for the tour.
“The Cottage & Garden Tour will focus on history and the artisanal quality of craftsmanship, architecture and artwork of our small-town,” explains Elaine Murdy-Trucke, CBHCM Director. In celebration of the 11th year, tour-goers are invited to see eleven vintage cottages, beach dream homes, and well-manicured gardens.
What sets the Cannon Beach Cottage & Garden Tour apart from other home tour events?
Not only does the tour take place in one of, according to National Geographic’s “World’s Most Beautiful Places, one of the world’s most beautiful places. The town consistently wins awards for its idyllic charm and natural beauty. If that isn’t enough for you the tour will feature one of the town’s most iconic homes. The home of former Governor Oswald West. West was governor from 1911 – 1915. West’s most important and recognizable legacy to Oregon was the bill he established in 1913 that was Oregon’s beach highway law, declaring the entire Pacific coastline to the high tide to be a public highway. The law protecting public access remains in effect today on Oregon beaches.
The two story home features a beautiful beach stone fireplace and log house design, complete with giant Sitka Spruce. The home is a must-see.
Get your tickets now! A lot of events encourage advance ticket purchases, but this is one those events that you can truly benefit from purchasing in advance. No waiting in the will-call line, just pull up at the Museum and a volunteer will hand you a map indicating parking, the homes and gardens to tour, and other useful information. Easy peasy!
Let’s not forget the ever popular and always sold out luncheon and lecture event. The luncheon takes place at the Tolovana Inn and is catered by Culinary Capers. The presentation will be given by local artisan, Ed Overbay. Since 1974, Overbay has been recognized as premiere northern Oregon artisan woodworker and craftsman. His company, Overbay Houseworks, has been creating, reinventing, and preserving unique Pacific Northwest architecture.
Following the tour attendees are invited to kick off their walking shoes and slip on their dancing shoes for a concert. All Museum doors will be open, with music floating through the air. Local phenom Maggie Kitson and her team of musicians will rock the evening away with soulful blues, R&B, and funk. Enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres prepared by Sweet Charity. The highly anticipated quilt raffle will take place at 7:00 p.m. The quilt was designed and created by local quilt artist Marilyn Dwyer. The quilt, entitled “By the Beautiful Sea” brings together iconic images of Cannon Beach surrounded by a swirl of blues, giving the impression of the coming tides. Raffle tickets are just five dollars.
The weekend’s events will wrap up with a brunch and garden presentation by local landscape architect, gardener and artist, Beth Holland. Holland will be hosting a dinner-theater style reading of minutes from select meetings of the Tolovana Garden Club at the Tolovana Inn at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 14. This event sold out last year as well, so get your tickets now!
